The Phoenix Suns are assigning rookie second-round pick De'Anthony Melton to their G-League affiliate, the Northern Arizona Suns per official release on NBA.com. This is typical roster shuffling as teams prepare their G League rosters for the season.

Melton was dealt to the Suns from the Houston Rockets in the deal that also saw Ryan Anderson head to Phoenix in exchange for Marquese Chriss and Brandon Knight.

Melton only appeared in two games this season and only played an average of 11 minutes in those two games. The 20-year-old from USC is a promising young point guard, but it's clear the Suns think he needs some seasoning in the G League before he's ready to take on a full-time role in Phoenix.

Melton isn't quite ready yet, but he should have an opportunity to rejoin the rotation at some point this season. The Suns don't have a reliable option at point guard right now and they are resorting to putting the ball in Devin Booker's hands more. This isn't a bad thing because Booker is one of the best scorers in the league, but Phoenix would love to have a point guard step up and assert himself so they can move Booker back to his more natural position as a two-guard.

Melton's time will come, but for now, the Suns believe it's best for him to get reps in the G League. Expect to see the second rounder rejoin Phoenix at some point in the near future.
