If the Phoenix Suns end up receiving the No. 1 overall selection in June's NBA Draft, they apparently aren't going with the best overall player on the board. What they would acquire, however, is a player with superstar potential, at a position they dearly need to fill for the sustainability of the franchise. While Zion Williamson remains the obvious favorite to be the top pick this year, Ja Morant is goading the Suns into changing that presumed narrative.
According to Sam Vecenie of The Athletic, sources around the NBA are buzzing that Morant is actually the player the Suns prefer to end up with. Recently-hired general manager James Jones is thought to be a fan of the young guard and given their need at the point guard position, it's possible Phoenix could do the unheard-of and pass on the 6-foot-7, 285-pound monster out of Duke University.
Morant is currently projected to be taken second, behind Williamson, in the upcoming draft. He is coming off a stellar sophomore campaign with Murray State, where he became the first player in school history to be named a first-team Associated Press All-American.
His refined all-around craft and athleticism could benefit any lottery team that's lucky enough to obtain one of these top draft spots, most notably Phoenix, whose starting point guard is essentially unoccupied.
Best-case scenario, the Phoenix Suns pull pick No. 2 out of the hat and aren't left with the inequitable burden of making the wrong, right decision.
