Former NBA head coach Mike Fratello has been announced by USA Basketball as the head coach of the Men’s National Team that will suit up for the February 2020 FIBA AmeriCup qualifying games, per the organization. USA Basketball also named Andy Greer and Othella Harrington as Fratello's assistant coaches.

The hire means fellow ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy won't continue as the supplementary coach in charge of qualifying Team USA for larger tournaments, namely the Olympics and the FIBA World Cup.

Van Gundy had compiled a 13-2 record as coach of a team comprised of G League and overseas talent, which got the United States qualified to play in the recent 2019 World Cup, where they finished seventh.

Much like Van Gundy did two years ago, the FIBA AmeriCup qualifying will consist of three windows, each which will feature two games. The first taking place between Feb. 20-24, 2020 in a home-and-away against Puerto Rico.

The 2020-21 FIBA AmeriCup qualifiers feature 16 teams from the Americas zone divided into four groups of four teams (A, B, C, & D). The top three finishing teams in each Group will earn a qualifying berth in the FIBA AmeriCup 2021.

“It is a major coup for USA Basketball to have such an experienced and successful coach agree to undertake the coaching responsibility for the February 2020 USA AmeriCup Qualifying Team,” said USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley. “The new AmeriCup qualifying process will be challenging, and USA Basketball is looking to build on the successes of our 2017 gold medalist AmeriCup team and the World Cup qualifying teams. Having a respected and an internationally experienced coach such as Mike Fratello on our bench is a big plus.  USA Basketball is also fortunate and appreciative of having the continued commitment of assistant coaches Andy Greer and Othella Harrington.”

USA Basketball is forced to split coaching responsibilities, as Gregg Popovich, who coached the team this summer, has obligations as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs during times of competition; as well as NBA players.
