Daniil Medvedev looked like he was going to cruise to the Australian Open title over Rafael Nadal when he won the first two sets. Unfortunately for Medvedev, he wasn't able to put away Nadal, and the Russian wound up losing in heartbreaking fashion in five sets.

Nadal made history with his victory, earning his 21st Grand Slam victory to pass Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic for most of all time. Medvedev was looking to make some history of his own after winning the US Open, but he couldn't seal the deal.

Following this Australian Open collapse, Medvedev got on the mic to talk about the epic final match. The Russian tried to stay in good spirits and was complimentary of Nadal for the comeback:

Medvedev was very gracious here in defeat after blowing a prime opportunity to win the Australian Open. For sure, Nadal had to play great to pull off the comeback, but Medvedev has to be kicking himself.

The 25-year-old became the favorite to win this tournament after Novak Djokovic was deported from Australia because of his COVID-19 vaccine scandal. Medvedev held the second seed and was primed to win after losing to Djokovic in the Australian Open final last year.

Unfortunately, that first Australian Open title will have to wait. Medvedev has a lot of great tennis ahead of him, especially with the legends of the sport all getting up there in age and nearing retirement.

But on this day, it was still Rafael Nadal's time to shine.
