Longtime NFL punter Shane Lechler has officially called it a career. The former Oakland Raiders and Houston Texans punter did not play last season after being cut by the latter franchise but did not formally hang up his cleats until this offseason.

“A retirement party fit for a GOAT,” Texans pass rusher J.J. Watt recently wrote on Instagram. “This man is the greatest punter to ever walk the earth, but even more than that, he is one of the best people to ever walk this earth. You are truly one of a kind brother and last night was a testament to that as friends, family and teammates flew in from all over the country to celebrate you.

“And we'll do it all again in a few years when they're putting that gold jacket on you. I love you brother, congrats on an unbelievable career!!!”

Lechler, who remained in Oakland between 2000 and 2012, finished out his illustrious NFL career as a member of the Texans after originally arriving in Houston back in 2013. A seven-time Pro Bowl selection, the seasoned special teamer was also named to nine All-Pro teams with six of those instances resulting in first-team All-Pro finishes.

“I’m gearing up for 10 days on the road, but you can bet your ass I’ll be in the city of Canton when the big legged, beer drinking, [GOAT] gets immortalized forever in the football world,” added former NFL punter Pat McAfee. “Congrats on an incredible career. Go enjoy that beautiful family of yours.”

Lechler was selected by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2000 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M and thus beginning quite the stretch of special teams brilliance.
