Gears of War developers The Coalition had a huge announcement in their latest blog post. They reveal that upcoming content from the Gears of War Series will be developed on the Unreal Engine 5. The developers expressed their excitement as they move forward with the franchise through the use of the next-gen engine.

Epic unveiled Unreal Engine 5 in May 2020, but the full release will be coming this late 2021. Fans were given a sneak peek at the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 through a PlayStation 5 game demo published on their website.

The series has always made use of Unreal Engine for its development. According to the developers, the Gears of War series “has always been at the front of Unreal Engine development.” With the move to Unreal Engine 5, the developers show that they want to take it to the next level. The shift to Unreal Engine 5 means that there will be major improvements to the game's future releases.

The move to Unreal Engine 5 does come with repercussions. The developers said in their blog post that “Shifting to a new engine is a big undertaking, so we want to be clear that we will not be announcing any new projects or titles for some time.” So, we can expect that it will take some time for a new Gears of War title release. However, we can still expect upcoming content for the newly released Gears 5. The developers have confirmed through a Reddit post that they will have content updates for Gears 5 so the wait for fans of the franchise isn't all that bad.
