The early results of the NBA All-Star voting are in and there were some surprising results. Before getting into the head-scratching parts of the voting, it’s worth noting that Luka Dončić leads all players in votes at just 20-years-old while Giannis Antetokounmpo leads the Eastern Conference again.

Despite playing in only 11 minutes, Boston Celtics fan-favorite Tacko Fall managed to total 110,269 votes and that ranks fifth among all East frontcourt players. It may be a good idea for the NBA to institute a minimum for total minutes played for a player to be eligible to be listed on the All-Star ballot.

The power of the Los Angeles Lakers fanbase was on full display on the Western Conference portion of the voting. Somehow, Alex Caruso totaled 92,233 votes and finished above Devin Booker and Ja Morant. Meanwhile, Dwight Howard came in at 10th for total votes among West frontcourt players.

The selections to the All-Star team are not determined exclusively by fan voting. As the NBA’s official release explains, only the 10 starters are impacted by fan voting and it only accounts for half of the criteria for those spots. The reserves are determined by coaches.

Fans account for 50 percent of the vote to determine the 10 starters for the 2020 NBA All-Star Game, which will take place at the United Center in Chicago on Sunday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. ET on TNT.  All current NBA players and a media panel each account for 25 percent of the vote, with every voter completing one full ballot featuring two guards and three frontcourt players from each conference.

There were some other results that weren’t funny but were still interesting to see. Former superstars like Carmelo Anthony and Derrick Rose still have lots of dedicated fans ready to show their support when it comes to All-Star voting.

Let’s not overlook the fact that Anthony had 142,292 votes and ranked ahead of Brandon Ingram. While it’s certainly nice to see Melo back in the NBA, his averages of 16.2 points and 6.2 rebounds are not worthy of receiving more votes than Ingram, who is averaging 25.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.

The most popular bench player in the NBA is clearly Rose and the latest example of why came with these voting results. He currently ranks fourth among East guards with a total of 233,669. While he has been quite impactful off the bench in his role for the Detroit Pistons, his production just isn’t enough to be worthy of an All-Star spot.

The final day for All-Star voting is on Jan. 20 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
