The Nintendo Switch has sold 89.04 million units – now making it the 7th most popular video game console of all time. This puts it ahead of both the PlayStation 3 (87.4 million) and Xbox 360 (86 million).

This news was announced as part of Nintendo's June 30, 2021 sales report. It also showed the updated sales figures for the Nintendo 3DS (75.94 million) and Wii U (13.56 million). However, the Switch still has a ways to go to surpass the Wii (101.63) and Nintendo DS (154.02 million).

According to a report by IGN, Nintendo expects to sell 20.5 million more consoles before the end of the current financial year in March 2022. If this forecast turns out to be true, it would put it way ahead of the Wii, and that much closer to edging the top spot from the Nintendo DS.

Currently, though, the best-selling console of all-time is still Sony's PlayStation 2, which has sold 155 million units. There's still a lot of ground to cover if the Switch wants to take the throne.

The Nintendo Switch aims to keep its forward momentum with the recently announced Nintendo Switch OLED model. This new model features a 7-inch OLED screen and a few smaller improvements. It will release on October 8, 2021.

However, it might find some stiff competition with the Valve Steam Deck, which will release its first wave of units this holiday season. The Valve handheld boasts some powerful hardware and promises the entire Steam library in the palm of your hands.

There's going to be a much more vibrant handheld space with the arrival of the Steam Deck for sure, and you can check out our comparison of the two handhelds right here.
