Russell Westbrook says his relationship with Oklahoma City and the Thunder organization is “something that will stay with me the rest of my life.”
Westbrook is a Thunder legend and was more than just a basketball player to OKC. He was an idol and hero to all the kids in Oklahoma City.
The former MVP will get his No. 0 jersey retired and probably get a statue outside Chesapeake Energy Arena one day:
“It's tough. It's something that will stay with me the rest of my life,” Westbrook said, via Royce Young of ESPN. “Because I basically grew up there, in Oklahoma City. Eighteen years old in Oklahoma City and the people, the organization, never done me wrong. They always stood up for me and my family — always had my back — and I'm very, very grateful and I don't take that for granted.
“Like I said, Sam (Presti) and Mr. Bennett, Coach Brooks, Coach Donovan, the whole staff, everybody over there always had my best interests and I can't do nothing but be thankful and grateful for what they did for me and my family.”
Russell Westbrook finished his SuperSonics/Thunder career with averages of 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 8.4 assists. He won the 2017 MVP award and is the franchise leader in points, free throws and Box Plus/Minus.
Russ averaged a triple-double three seasons in a row. More importantly, Westbrook did a lot of charity work in Oklahoma City and represented the Thunder proudly off the court.
The ovation Westbrook is going to get when he returns to OKC is going to be deafening.
