Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams says he started taking basketball seriously at 13-years-old.
Adams, who grew up in New Zealand, was always tall, but he began to hone in on his skills at 13. The big man played his high school basketball at Notre Dame Preparatory School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Adams then played college basketball at the University of Pittsburgh.
The Thunder selected Adams with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
“So I started taking it seriously at like 13,” Adams told Sam Amick of The Athletic. “I played growing up. I was just thrown into it because I was tall, but after I moved when I was 13 to Wellington, then I started playing basketball quite seriously. And what I mean by taking it seriously is sticking to a pretty good schedule, which was 6 o’clock every morning, go workout before school and then go back after school as well. Did that into high school.”
Adams has turned himself into one of the best centers in the NBA. He signed a four-year, $100 million extension with the Thunder in 2016.
This season, Adams averaged 13.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 59.5 percent from the field.
