Charlie Brewer has had quite the college career that saw him play for four years at Baylor before moving on to the Utah Utes this past offseason.
After just three games with Utah, via Josh Newman of the Salt Lake Tribune, Brewer is leaving the program. Part of the reasoning could be after he was benched in the Utes' triple-overtime loss to San Diego State on Saturday.
Article Continues BelowBrewer was benched in favor of backup Cam Rising during the Utes’ overtime loss to San Diego State on Saturday night. Before being benched Saturday, Brewer led drives that ended in seven punts, plus a crushing interception by Tayler Hawkins on a pass Brewer badly telegraphed. Hawkins returned it to the Utah 7-yard line, Greg Bell ran the ball in on the next play for his second touchdown in a 42-second span, and the Aztecs, who beat Arizona last week, took a 24-10 lead with 10:42 left in the third quarter.
It had been a tough start to the season for Brewer as he had thrown for three touchdowns and three interceptions in those three games for Utah while also having a completion percentage of just 60% (career low).
Whether or not Brewer has any college football eligibility left is somewhat being debated at this time but what is clear is that he won't be returning to Utah. It's a bit of a bizarre move after just three games but it's possible he thought the starting job was gone and didn't want to sit around as a backup being that he's a fifth-year senior.
