The future between Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings is murky following their elimination from the playoffs. As he heads into the final year of his contract with Minnesota, Cousins gave some great advice to the rest of the players in the NFL.

“Well, that’s the NFL, right? I mean, you just keep going and you understand that if you keep playing and do your part then you’re going to get more opportunities,” Cousins said via the SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I’m blessed to be able to be looking back with two of those years behind me and looking forward to finishing out that contract in Minnesota.”

Cousins, who had one of the most efficient seasons of his career, was a Pro Bowl replacement this season. The veteran quarterback finished the 2019 season with 3,609 yards, 26 touchdowns, and only six interceptions.

Despite his numbers as a starter in the past few seasons, Cousins has found himself in a contract-year multiple times. Of course, before the Vikings, Cousins dealt with a similar situation when he was with the Washington Redskins.

Following his time in Washington, the Vikings signed Cousins to a three-year, $84 million deal. Even as a franchise quarterback, Cousins is proving that nothing is guaranteed as a professional athlete.

Since becoming a starting quarterback in 2015, Cousins has been criticized for his performance in big games. Due to his inability to consistently perform in clutch moments, Minnesota is unsure if they'll extend his contract beyond 2020.

Fortunately for Cousins, being unsure about his future isn't unfamiliar territory for him. At the same time, his contract situation should show other players that you aren't handed anything in the NFL.
