The Minnesota Vikings have waived wide receiver Josh Doctson, clearing a spot for linebacker Cameron Smith ahead of the teams Week 13 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.
Doctson was selected by the Washington Redskins with the 22nd pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, but has since been released by the team and continues to be a journeyman wide receiver.
In 34 games Doctson has 81 receptions on 126 targets for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns.
There was much hope for Doctson when he was drafted by the Redskins. Credited as a downfield threat and red-zone target, Doctson was expected to add a new dynamic to a poor Redskins receiving core at the time.
At the time, the 2016 wide receiver draft class was considered thin, with Will Fuller, Doctson and Laquon Treadwell taken consecutively in the last half of the first round.
Some known receivers taken outside of the first round include Sterling Shepard, Michael Thomas, Tyler Boyd, and Tyreek Hill.
While Washington and Minnesota missed on their wide receiver picks in 2016, the teams can be proud to boast the talents of Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen, and Terry McLaurin.
Doctson will hit the waivers soon and could be a target for teams making a playoff run or going into the playoffs with some needed help at wide receiver. Potential teams could include the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Minnesota is currently 8-3 and coming off a bye week as they take on MVP candidate Russell Wilson and the Seahawks.
