Vikings WR Stefon Diggs wears customized Spongebob meme shoes

Stefon Diggs, Vikings

Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Stefon Diggs gave back to the meme culture with a humorously decorated pair of football cleats during Week 2’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

The Vikings shared Diggs’ shoes on Twitter on Sunday morning, featuring a pair of illustrated scenes from Nickelodeon’s longtime running animated series Spongebob Squarepants. The character Spongebob and his cartoon friends have been subjects of many tentpole internet jokes, including a recent one showing a despondent Squarepants lifting himself out of a sofa chair appearing to sullenly exit.

Diggs used the internet’s humor to spice up his personalized cleats, on one shoe displaying a rhetorical “You have to cover #14 (Diggs) today” and the other foot painted with “Ight imma head out.”

Diggs only recorded two receptions for 37 yards in the Vikings’ Week 1 win over the Atlanta Falcons to open the 2019 regular season. In Week 2’s tilt with the NFC North division rivals Packers, Diggs already scored one receiving touchdown—before the score was taken off the board by officials due to offensive pass interference.

The 25-year-old wideout is best known for his “miracle” reception in the playoffs for the Vikings. Diggs scored a 61-yard touchdown in the final moments of Minnesota’s 2017-18 division round matchup with the New Orleans Saints. Diggs and the Vikings eventually loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game that year.

Last season for the Vikings, Stefon Diggs recorded 102 receptions for 1,021 yards and nine touchdowns, cementing himself as a key option on offensive for quarterback Kirk Cousins.
