As a former NBA player, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr understands how difficult it can be navigating a career when a team can trade you at a moment's notice. So when reports surfaced recently that the franchise could potentially deal Kelly Oubre Jr., Kerr quickly addressed the matter head-on.

Appearing on a local sports radio show, the head coach explained that he was transparent with Oubre that the Warriors were not, in fact, interested in trading him (transcript via Marcus White of NBC Sports):

“I think it's important for guys to accept it because in the modern life that we live there's just going to be constant scrutiny and judgment and rumors and all kinds of stuff,” the Warriors coach said. “But I did feel compelled to tell everybody exactly what happened, which was, somebody called us, there wasn't even an offer made and all of a sudden, it's on the internet. So that stuff is frustrating when it happens.”

While Kelly Oubre Jr. can be relieved that his immediate future in Golden State is secure, he is no stranger to having his name appear in trade rumors. Though he is only in his sixth year as a professional player, both the Washington Wizards and Phoenix Suns have opted to trade him in the past.

An athletic perimeter player, Oubre has impressed scouts for years with his off-ball cutting ability and potential on defense, even as he has struggled with his shooting and lackluster effort. Hopefully for the Warriors and Steve Kerr, their transparency will pay dividends with a renewed commitment on the part of Oubre.
