The Wayward Realms is an upcoming single-player “Grand RPG” game coming from OnceLost Games. This studio is led by former The Elder Scrolls developers and video game industry veterans Ted Peterson and Julian LeFay. Only revealed a few days ago, not a lot of people have heard about this game yet. If you’re one of the few who have and are wondering what it’s all about, you’ve come to the right place. This article has everything you need to know about The Wayward Realms.
Wayward Realms Release Date: When is Wayward Realms coming out?
The Wayward Realms was first unveiled on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. The developers admitted that the game is currently in very early development. Hence, we can’t expect the game to come out anytime soon. The developers also didn’t give any roadmap on when we can look forward to playing the game. That’s a good move in terms of setting reasonable expectations.
However, if that’s the case, after all, why reveal the game this early anyway? Perhaps OnceLost Games is looking to leverage the interest this reveal would develop for investors. We don’t know their exact motives, but still it could just be the developers wanting to share their work early with their old fans.
What consoles and platforms will The Wayward Realms will be on?
The game, just like most The Elder Scrolls games, will be a “PC-first” title. However, OnceLost Games didn’t discount the possibility of The Wayward Realms coming out on next-gen consoles. “For now the focus is PC, but we would love to bring it on console,” OnceLost Games tweeted. “With the hardware of the new generations and Unreal making it easier to port, it is a good possibility, but no promises.”
Getting to play a game on the scale of The Wayward Realms on PC is expected. However, it will be awesome if we can play the upcoming single-player open-world RPG game on the PS5 and Xbox Series X as well. Don’t count on there being a Nintendo Switch version, though, unless they manage to make a port with a cloud version.
As for platforms, The Wayward Realms came to the public along with a Steam store page. The store page has a lot of information about the game, but there’s still a lot of things about it under wraps.
What is the game about? What’s the setting?
Just like The Elder Scrolls, The Wayward Realms will be played in a fantasy setting. That’s very apparent in the trailer, which featured a cavalier and motifs of skulls, and vast, sprawling landscapes.
The game’s official website offers some background:
“The Wayward Realms is set on a group of over one hundred islands, ranging from small to massive, known collectively as the Archipelago, where scores of factions vie for influence and power. Dynasties strive to maintain the status quo, upstarts seek to earn their place at the top, and intriguing power-houses set generational plots into motion. Should the player earn a position beside a distinguished seat, he or she may change the course of history. However, they must first prove their worth. Players will venture through strange lands, encountering humans, elves, dwarves, and other races of a more unusual nature, all of whom live within the Archipelago and its kingdoms.”
Who’s responsible? Who are OnceLost Games?
As mentioned in this article’s opener, OnceLost Games is led by two industry veterans. These two worked on The Elder Scrolls Daggerfall and The Elder Scrolls Arena. The team currently works as a small, close-knit group. They’re currently hiring for this project, as can be seen from their website’s job listing. The post talks about ‘volunteers’ and ‘extra hands,’ so we believe all work might not be compensated right away.
The Wayward Realms will be the development studio’s first project, and all eyes are on them. While they are led by two big names of the industry, it will still be mostly up to the dev team to bring the game to life.
We will continue updating this article as more information comes up. In the meantime, you may follow The Wayward Realms on Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, and Discord.
