Chicago White Sox fans should hold their breath. Young right-hander Michael Kopech limped to the dugout after landing awkwardly on his left leg during Wednesday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Kopech worked an inning of relief against the Cardinals and got Redbirds outfielder Lane Thomas to pop out to third base to end the top of the seventh inning. But Kopech fell in a heap immediately upon delivering his 2-2 to Thomas, subsequently limping off the field.

The White Sox can only hope the flamethrower has avoided a serious injury. It sure didn't look good.

Kopech has been terrific in a swing role for the White Sox. He entered Wednesday's game with a 1.78 ERA in 30.1 innings, also making three starts.

The 25-year-old's emergence as a top arm has been especially encouraging considering his trajectory. Kopech was one of the White Sox's prized prospects when he made his debut in 2018, but he subsequently underwent Tommy John surgery and opted out of the 2020 campaign due to health concerns. There were ample questions as to how he would look and respond in a steadier role in 2021.

However, Kopech has answered the bell. Aside from the effectiveness, he is also striking out 13.4 opponents per nine innings. Kopech gives the White Sox yet another power arm in a young and deep bullpen, and also has the capability to be a spot starter in a season when having rotation depth has been absolutely pivotal.

There have been a frustrating number of injuries in baseball this season. The White Sox will likely hope their young star will not be out too long.
