The San Antonio Spurs have a young roster with potential. However, there have been rumors about a Dejounte Murray trade. Murray is under contract through 2024 but the Spurs may want to trade him at peak value. Murray is fresh off of an All-Star caliber season that saw him average 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 9 assists. San Antonio is reportedly asking for 3 first round picks in return for Murray, per Legion Hoops, and Jake L. Fischer.

But the Spurs shouldn't even be entertaining trade offers. Here are 2 reasons why they should not trade Dejounte Murray.

2 Reasons Spurs should not trade Dejounte Murray

Jakob Poeltl/Dejounte Murray

Jakob Poeltl and Dejounte Murray displayed signs of becoming the best pick-and-roll duo in the NBA this past season. Obviously, you would be hard-pressed to find a point guard who runs the pick-and-roll better than Chris Paul. However, Murray demonstrated the I.Q. as well as the talent to pull it off. Poeltl also was lethal on the receiving end of it.

Running a traditional offense can be vital in today's wild NBA. Players rely on euro steps, step backs, and fancy dunks but often turn the ball over. A pick-and-roll offense can be useful in limiting turnovers and creating open looks. Allowing Murray and Poeltl to work together can be the key to building a winner in San Antonio.

It would require the Spurs to extend both players, since Poeltl will be a free agent following the 2023 campaign. But if the Spurs want to build around this duo then extending them is the way to go.

It wasn't all that long ago that the Spurs had a dynasty of sorts with Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili leading the charge. They should try and recreate that kind of roster foundation.

The Spurs are a couple of key players away from becoming a contender. If they can successfully add pieces to their Murray/Poeltl led team, there could be dynasty potential in the making. Players switch teams all of the time in today's NBA so it would be refreshing to see a core group of players stay in one city for a long while.

This would have to be a two way street of course. Both both Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl would need to be interested in remaining in San Antonio. But the duo seems to enjoy playing together which is a start. If the organization develops a winning culture in the near future that would go a long way in enticing them to remain in San Antonio as well.
