Rejoice gamers as the Christmas season has officially arrived. With the release of the PlayStation 5 comes an opportunity for gamers to go on a spending spree.

Unfortunately, not everyone can afford Sony's latest console.

Perhaps its best to spend some of your earnings to experience the timeless classic known as the PlayStation 4. Some may have already thought about their spending habits, while others may struggle in doing so.

Fret not, as we've prepared a holiday gift guide for the PlayStation 4.

WHY THE PLAYSTATION 4?

Not only is the PS4 cheaper as compared to the PS5, but also tried and tested given the countless gems it boasts.  Many of the industry's best games and accessories stem from the PS4.

In addition, the PS4 doesn't consume a lot of furniture space given its smaller frame. It also helps that a slim version's size allows you to travel around with your PS4 while performing similarly to the original PS4.

The PS4 costs around $299-$399 as compared to the latest entry that is priced at $399-$499. The PS4's cheaper price tag is also a drawback as gamers would flock the online markets to purchase it. The only PS4 offers left are the overpriced deals on Amazon.

The price will ultimately depend on the player's choice between going for the original Ps4 or going for the Pro version. Obviously, the Pro is more expensive over the original as it offers a 4K HDR which is beyond the 1080p resolution of the original PS4. This means that the Pro can offer a resolution as high as 2160p, beyond the usual scope of any YouTube video.

With a 2160p, your Netflix and chill moments could reach a zenith.

KEY DIFFERENCES

The PS4 doesn't have the same performance upgrades as the latest entry has a Blu Ray Player and most notably the graphical improvements caused by ray tracing.

Since the PS5 naturally comes with faster loading times, PS4 users might be tempted to upgrade with an SSD feature. This will hasten the PS4's loading time however it will still remain inferior to its counterpart.

It does increase the storage capacity of your console which is needed for games that offer a hundred worth of gigabytes like Red Dead Redemption 2. The original PS4 isn't blessed with the highest storage as it is limited to 500GB.

Though the SSD feature improves on speed and storage, it is highly discouraged to purchase one since the overall price tag will make it similar to the PS5. The PS5 already has a built-in SSD feature and buying a PS4 alongside an SSD upgrade may not be worth the bargain.

It's only advisable to go for an SSD upgrade if you have no plans of buying the PS5.

ACCESSORIES

The dilemma of buying an SSD for your PlayStation 4 likewise applies with accessories. If you don't plan on purchasing the latest console, then perhaps spending on these accessories may be suited for you.

DualShock 4 controllers are worth purchasing if you're a fan of open world experiences, given that the TouchPad feature allows the player to control the maps with efficiency. It's worth $50-70. If you have gargantuan hands, then buying the Nacon Revolution Pro Controller v2 may be ideal as the larger grip handles offer a smoother experience. It's more expensive amounting to $158, but the price is currently reduced to $84.

The controllers are best used with the PDP Gaming Ultra Slim Charging System an accessory that simplifies the charging experience. Instead of using cables and wires, the PDP allows the player to place the controllers on the tray and leave it be. It's worth $30.

VR EXPERIENCE

Is your bank account raining with cash? Are you immune from nausea? If yes, then the VR headset could offer you the best gaming experience. Imagine the power of living inside your virtual universe. It could be as mesmerizing as traversing the golden castles or horrific as shooting mutated creatures in an apocalyptic setting. Though its price tag is costly ranging from $250-$300, its performance level in the PS4 justifies the insane cost. This doesn't yet include the PS4 camera, which will add more to your expenditures.

In the long run it could be worth the investment as the PSVR is compatible for both PS4 and PS5. However, fans and critics noted that the PS4 version is more refined as there are issues with the PS5 version. Sony will definitely addressed them in the mere future.

GAMES!

The PS4 is already blessed not only with the best gaming accessories, but also in terms of gaming titles. There are the timeless classics that will forever be engrained in gaming history which includes the following.

  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • God of War
  • Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Marvel's Spider-Man
  • Nier: Automata

I may have triggered some for not including the other titles but that already speaks volume about the console's legacy. It's hard to pinpoint which games to select in your bucket list as there are a plethora of options to choose from.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is considered to be one of the best games of the console due to its character driven narrative. Horizon Zero Dawn has captured the attention of gamers for its combat mechanics and detailed atmosphere.

Nier: Automata offers a unique twist in terms of gameplay mechanics and storytelling. Marvel's Spider-Man allows the player to be more involved in the web slinging adventures of Peter Parker, more than what the movies offer.

As for God of War? There's nothing else for me to say. Just buy it!

There are other noteworthy titles to consider as well. The Last of Us was remastered for the PS4 and its highly acclaimed sequel is likewise available.

Did Netflix confuse you with the Witcher? Why not play the game instead.

Do you wish to spend Christmas like Halloween by playing inside a dark room with 4K graphics? Go for Resident Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil 7.

Is dying your hobby? Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne could entertain or enraged you for eternity.

Are you curious about Japanese culture? Both Ghost of Tsushima and Persona 5 could unleash your inner weeb.

CONCLUSION

Overall the PS4 is still worth eyeing for in the holidays. It may not boast the same features as the PS5, but it still offers a solid gaming experience that's worth investing. It's best to keep a tab on those holiday sales which might further ease your financial burdens. Be wary of online sellers that might capitalize on the holiday shopping spree.

Merry Christmas and keep unlocking those trophies!
