There's a new era brewing for the Detroit Lions as Dan Campbell accepted the team's vacant head-coaching job. But with Campbell making his presence felt — you can argue he did something else — in his introductory conference, there's an era coming to a close with Matthew Stafford wanting out.

It was reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter that Stafford and the Lions have mutually agreed to part ways this offseason. Seeing that Stafford still has two years remaining on his current contract, his departure would have to come in the form of a trade.

With Matthew Stafford being made available, there will likely be a handful of quarterback-needy teams asking for the veteran quarterback's services. Besides reporting the trade itself, Schefter shared that Detroit is expected to receive at least a first-round pick in return for Stafford.

Of course, whatever team makes a move for Matthew Stafford will need to be able to consume the rest of his contract before completing the trade. Taking that into consideration, let's take a look at a few teams that should be considered the most desirable destinations for Stafford.

Washington Football Team

Matthew Stafford knows that throughout the 2020 season, the Washington Football Team had four different quarterbacks take snaps for them at some point. One of the biggest storylines of this season was the miraculous return of Alex Smith, who was two years removed from a life-threatening leg injury.

Smith started in six games for Washington, giving Ron Rivera a veteran presence to lead the offense. While Smith was a feel-good story on the team, Dwayne Haskins would struggle on and off of the field, which led to his release near the end of the regular season.

With Smith's future with Washington unknown, and the lack of a viable option at quarterback, Washington would make sense for Matthew Stafford. Besides having reliable weapons in Terry McLaurin, Logan Thomas, and Antonio Gibson, Washington has an up-and-coming defense that is led by their daunting defensive front.

Not to mention, Matthew Stafford would get away from the NFC North — where the Green Bay Packers have reigned supreme for years — to join the NFC East, which hasn't been tough to win in recent seasons.

New England Patriots

The New England Patriots were in uncharted waters last offseason when Tom Brady decided to depart in free agency in favor of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, after a failed season with Cam Newton, the Patriots find themselves in the market for a quarterback once again.

And to make matters even better for New England, they have the fourth-most cap space in the NFL entering this offseason, per Over the Cap. So if the Patriots were able to manufacture a move for Matthew Stafford, they would also have enough cap room to get him a weapon or two in the offense. Maybe Stafford can be reunited with Kenny Golladay in Foxborough?

Plus, New England will be getting back some of their marquee starters on offense and defense back in 2021 after some of them opted-out due to COVID-19. Over the years, the Patriots and Lions have shown they are willing to do business together, which could result in Bill Belichick finding a proven starter — Matthew Stafford — who could possibly get him back to the playoffs.

Indianapolis Colts

When speaking about the best possible situation for Matthew Stafford and the team that acquires him, it's hard not to believe the Indianapolis Colts make the most sense. First and foremost, Stafford would be joining forces with a quarterback-friendly head coach in Frank Reich that could maximize his talent.

Additionally, the Colts have the second-most cap space in the NFL this offseason, which could lead to them adding to their already-decent arsenal of weapons on offense. Even before making any moves, Indianapolis boasts an offense with Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman Jr., Nyheim Hines, and Jack Doyle.

Meanwhile, Matthew Stafford would also get to play behind a sturdy offensive line, which could help him remain healthy in the latter part of his career. Lastly, the defense of the Colts has become a stout unit, leading many to believe that they are only a quarterback away from causing serious damage in the AFC.

The idea of Reich getting Matthew Stafford in his offense should be unwelcomed news from the opposing teams in the AFC South.
