Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are entering the 2020 NFL season as defending champions following their victory over the San Francisco 49ers last year. While they had a full offseason to enjoy their championship, they are fully aware that a big “X” has been painted on their backs. They are now the team to beat in the NFL and are cherishing that role.
Throughout the offseason, the Chiefs took care of a lot of business. Mahomes was signed to a monstrous 10-year extension worth $503 million. Obviously, that is the richest contract that any player has ever signed in the history of the NFL.
In addition to locking up Mahomes, the Chiefs also worked out an extension with star tight end Travis Kelce and star defensive lineman Chris Jones. Kansas City is looking to become the league's next dynasty following the departure of Tom Brady from the New England Patriots. Now, the path to becoming that dynasty starts against the Houston Texans in Week 1.
Fans could not be more excited for the NFL season to get underway. After an offseason full of uncertainty due to COVID-19, it appears that everything is a go for Week 1. Both the Chiefs and Texans are talented football teams and fans are going to tune in.
All of that being said, let's dive in to the Chiefs' Week 1 matchup against the Texans and take a look at three bold predictions for Kansas City.
3. Kansas City Forces At Least Three Turnovers
One of the only question marks that the Chiefs must answer this season is whether or not their defense can keep up with their offense. In the secondary, Kansas City is working with Rashad Fenton and Charvarius Ward as their projected starting cornerbacks. Tyrann Mathieu is the obvious star in the secondary along with Juan Thornhill.
The Chiefs are young in their secondary, but they have plenty of talent. They simply need to prove that they can hang with elite offenses.
While the Texans may not have DeAndre Hopkins anymore after their blockbuster offseason trade that sent him to the Arizona Cardinals, they still have a lot of weapons. Deshaun Watson is an elite quarterback and he has weapons like Randall Cobb, Kenny Stills, Will Fuller, and Brandin Cooks. David Johnson is new in the backfield.
This is going to be a test for the Chiefs, but they will pass with flying colors by forcing three turnovers against a talented offense.
2. Patrick Mahomes Picks Up Where He Left Off
Nothing will change for Mahomes following his massive payday. He is still going to approach every game with the same passion and competitive spirit that has made him the NFL's highest-paid player.
Mahomes is going up against a Texans' defense that has talent, but also has plenty of holes. He will exploit every weakness that Houston has. To put it in perspective, Mahomes is going to rack up 400 or more passing yards and four touchdowns.
In addition to his big numbers, Mahomes won't turn the football over a single time. J.J. Watt and company will do their best to contain Mahomes, but it will not work.
1. Kansas City Wins Big In Week 1
Finally, the Chiefs are going to come in and take down the Texans easily. They are by far the better team on paper and that will translate to the field. Kansas City will come in strong out of the gate and won't look back.
Unlike the last time these two teams met in the Divisional Round of the AFC Playoffs last season, the Texans won't have a single lead in the game. Last year in the playoffs, Houston got out to a 24-0 lead before blowing it and losing to the Chiefs.
Kansas City is going to win this one by a final score of 35-21. Mahomes and company get off to a 1-0 start and will show why they are considered Super Bowl favorites once again in 2020.
