The Miami Dolphins are entering a new era in the 2022 NFL season, with head coach Mike McDaniel beginning his first year with the franchise. McDaniel will have a lot of shiny new toys to play with on offense, as the team acquired superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs, while also bringing in secondary weapons, such as receiver Cedrick WilsonJr., and running backs Raheem Mostert and Chase Edmonds.

It's clear that this offense is going through an overhaul. The Dolphins' defense has been capable in the past couple of years, though there's no doubt that an improved effort on the other side of the ball would go a long way towards making Miami a force in the AFC East. It starts at the quarterback spot, where Tua Tagovailoa will be entering his third season in the league.

Upon being hired, McDaniel said that he “sees greatness in Tagovailoa.”

The Dolphins hope that their new head coach can get the best out of Tagovailoa, who has never had this many weapons in his young NFL career. He's not the only one who could thrive under McDaniel's leadership.

These three Dolphins players have serious breakout potential in the 2022 season.

Dolphins Breakout Players For 2022 NFL Season

3. Raheem Mostert

Raheem Mostert has technically already arrived on the scene as a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Mostert exploded for over 200 rushing yards in a 2020 playoff game against the Green Bay Packers, effectively announcing his presence to the NFL.

However, for as explosive as he's been in his career, Mostert has never topped the 1000-yard mark. The speedy halfback had to contend with multiple players on the 49ers' roster, as well as injuries, which have limited him to just nine games in the last two seasons combined.

While the running back depth chart is still well stocked in Miami, the likes of Edmonds, Sony Michel and Myles Gaskin don't seem to be as effective on the ground as Mostert has been in his career.

The former 49ers running back, who ran a 4.34 40-yard dash, has averaged 5.7 yards per carry in his NFL career. He appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers once, tallying over 700 rushing yards and eight touchdowns back in 2019.

With McDaniel, who was the run game coordinator in San Francisco for four years, as his head coach, Mostert could finally get his chance to shine in Miami. If he can stay healthy, it's not hard to envision him eclipsing the 1000-yard rushing mark in the 2022 NFL season.

It's unclear if he'll be ready for Week 1, as he continues to recover from last year's knee injury. However, Mostert has breakout potential whenever he steps on the field.

2. Jaylen Waddle

It feels weird to write that a receiver who exceeded the 100-catch mark- breaking the rookie record for receptions- and 1000-yard mark in 2021 is going to have a breakout season in 2022. However, Waddle could do just that in 2022.

The Alabama product will be playing alongside former Chiefs star Tyreek Hill, who will surely attract massive amounts of defensive attention in Miami.

Waddle cited his yards after the catch average as an area he wants to improve. The speedy wideout already ranked 19th in the league in that statistic in 2021, yet he still feels he left yards on the field.

With Hill taking the top off defenses, Waddle could be free to work the underneath routes, where Tagovailoa excels the most.

Waddle has already effectively had his breakout season in 2021. However, Dolphins fans should get ready, as he is about to put forth an even better showing in year two.

1. Tua Tagovailoa

This is perhaps the most obvious breakout candidate on the Dolphins' roster in 2022. The franchise went all-out in their commitment to the signal-caller, as they improved the offensive line and the skill positions around him.

Tagovailoa will have a group of pass-catchers- Hill, Waddle, Wilson and Mike Gesicki, that most quarterbacks would dream of throwing to.

He has a coach in his corner, offensive coordinator Frank Smith, who has gotten the best out of players in the past. Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller, who burst onto the scene back in 2019, credits Smith with helping him “realize he could be great.”

Could Smith do the same with Tagovailoa in 2022? The Dolphins have already said that they can see the Alabama product “coming out of his shell.”

A more confident Tagovailoa, equipped with multiple game-changing playmakers, could be poised for a breakout campaign in 2022.
