The New York Jets fired general manager Mike Maccagnan just a few days ago and the rumors are already swirling about the roster. Reports have come out that Adam Gase never wanted to sign Bell and now that he is the acting GM there are some thoughts the team could trade him, even though he hasn't even played a snap with the team.

Although these rumors are swirling, this is the wrong move and there is no reason the Jets should give up on Bell this early. Let's breakdown the three biggest reasons the Jets need to keep Bell on the roster.

1. Bad publicity

Right now the Jets look like the laughing stock of the NFL and trading away Bell would not help that image. Trading Bell away just because Gase didn't want to spend that much money on a running back isn't a good reason to give up on him yet.

It's already bad enough that the Jets let Maccagnan sign all his free agents and complete a draft before firing him, trading away Bell would be even worse.

They don't know how Bell is going to perform on the field and they need to give him a chance. Laying low is probably the best option for the Jets at this point and trading away Bell would be the opposite of that.

2. Cap nightmare

Remember when the Pittsburgh Steelers traded away Antonio Brown and had to eat a bunch of dead space just to get the headache off their hands? Trading away Bell would have the same type of effect on the Jets cap and would hurt them not just this year but going forward.

Bell has a $13 million dollar cap hit this season but if the team were to trade him they would take on $25 million in dead cap.

They probably wouldn't get a ton in return and it wouldn't make it worth it having to eat the $12 million difference in cap space.

The best for Gase and the Jets if he really doesn't want him around is to keep him for two years and try to get the most out of him.

After two years the Jets can cut him and take back only $4 million dollars in dead cap space. That is a much easier pill to swallow and the road that the Jets need to go down if they really want to get rid of him.

3. Upgrade in the backfield

The first two points are important but what is lost in all of this is that Bell is still a superstar running back. He sat out last season and should be more than ready to have a big year with the Jets.

In 2017 Bell had 321 rushing attempts for 1,291 yards and nine touchdowns. Sam Darnold took big steps forward last year but he is still young. Bell is going to have to be accounted for and that should help open up the throwing lanes for Darnold.

I would expect Darnold to have a much better year with Bell lining up in the backfield.
