The San Francisco 49ers do not appear to be in any rush to trade Jimmy Garoppolo even after acquiring the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported earlier this week it would take a first-round pick for the Niners to even “listen” to overtures for “Jimmy G.” He added it appears more likely, at this juncture, San Francisco will retain Garoppolo and see if an incoming rookie quarterback can push him in camp.

Michael Giardi of NFL Network confirmed the Niners are after a first-round pick, also noting Garoppolo is getting some trade interest from none other than the New England Patriots.

Giardi added that despite re-signing with the Patriots, Cam Newton's base salary would not seem to indicate New England is locked in regarding his QB1 status.

Garoppolo, of course, was a former Pats backup who impressed enough during a pair of starts to prompt the Niners to trade for him midway through the 2017 season. The former Eastern Illinois product then went undefeated in five starts for the Niners, resulting in a lucrative extension.

Perhaps Bill Belichick wants his guy back in New England. But it seems unlikely the Pats would be willing to give up a first-round pick for Garoppolo.

The 29-year-old has dealt with a myriad of injuries in recent seasons, missing 10 games last season with an ankle issue. He also has fairly hefty cap hits in each of the next two seasons, though there is not much in the way of dead cap.

This could be a case of San Francisco seeing whether an opposing team will make a big offer or not for Jimmy G. Otherwise, the Niners could be content taking a quarterback later this month and then exploring their options down the road.
