San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead is currently on the mend following “minor” foot surgery, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

49ers DL Arik Armstead is recovering from minor foot surgery, source said. The procedure was described as a minor cleanup and he should be fine for most, if not all, of the spring drills.

Armstead, 24, was the Niners’ 17th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. However, the first-round pick has yet to live up to the lofty expectations brought about by his draft slot, in large part due to injuries.

He’s played just 14 total games in the past two seasons. He was placed on injured reserve in 2016 due to an injured left shoulder which required surgery. He then missed the last 10 games of last season after suffering a broken hand. Armstead has played a total of 30 games in his first three years in the league, recording six sacks and 50 total tackles.

Despite his multiple injury setbacks, the 49ers still decided to pick up Armstead’s fifth-year option last month. This is likely a strong indication that the 49ers still believe in Armstead’s upside as an impactful defensive lineman.

Armstead is part of a promising young 49ers D-line group which also features former first-rounders DeForest Buckner and Solomon Thomas, as well as Jerry Attaochu and Sheldon Day. But with major question marks hanging over the team’s pass rush, the likes of Armstead, Buckner, and Thomas will finally need to make good on all their potential for the Niners to make some noise in the NFC West.
