Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are currently taking part in summer practices in preparation for the upcoming 2024-25 NFL season, which will see them try to rebound from their painful loss in Super Bowl 58 to the Kansas City Chiefs. While several key 49ers players, including Purdy himself, are under contract for the long haul, not everyone in San Francisco's locker room is so happy with their current contract situations.
One of the biggest storylines all season for the 49ers has followed star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who wants an extension to his contract but has not been offered one yet by the franchise.
Things took a dramatic turn on Tuesday when mandatory minicamp for the team got underway.
“#49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk has not reported to mandatory minicamp, as he seeks a new contract. He is subject to fines. The second holdout of the day, along with #Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb,” reported NFL insider Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network on X, the social media platform formerly referred to as Twitter.
As Rapaport mentioned in his report, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb also held out on Tuesday in hopes of a contract extension of his own.
It's worth considering whether these two moves could be responses to a recent contract signed by Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson that essentially reset the marketplace at that position.
Will the 49ers extend Aiyuk?
The 49ers would not be close to as lethal an offensive team as they are today without the services of Aiyuk, who made several huge plays for the 49ers this past postseason, including some in their NFC Championship Game comeback vs the Detroit Lions.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day on Tuesday, the 49ers had already solidified their running back position for the next two years by extending Christian McCaffrey on a two-year deal that will pay him $19 million per year, per Adam Schefter on X.
In any case, it would certainly behoove the 49ers to get something worked out with Aiyuk sooner rather than later so that the team can have as many repetitions as possible ahead of the upcoming season.
