The San Francisco 49ers have yet to trade Jimmy Garoppolo which means at this moment in time, he and Trey Lance are set to battle it out for the QB1 job heading into training camp. But, it's clear Jerry Rice believes Lance is ready to take the reins right now.

Rice expressed how he thought Lance was always going to be special, even before the draft.

Via Boardroom:

“I knew Trey was going to be special from the first day I talked to him and I told him right before the draft you're going to be with the San Francisco 49ers and he was like no way! But you know, what he brings to the table is he's not only a great athlete but he's going to inspire everyone else around him to be great.”

Lance saw limited action in his rookie season, but there is a strong chance he becomes the 49ers' starter in 2022. The former North Dakota State star spent a year learning under Jimmy G and is certainly preparing himself to take San Fran back to the playoffs.

But even if the opportunity to start doesn't come this year, Rice has zero doubts Lance will thrive when he eventually steps into that role:

“This guy, he has all the tools,” Rice explained. “He’s got that rocket arm. And the thing too that he’s going to bring to the table: mobility. Being able to get outside, extend plays, do all of those things and still have the vision downfield where he can use that arm to get the ball to his playmakers.”

The 49ers certainly have a bright future at quarterback.
