Robbie Gould will be with the San Francisco 49ers for at least one more season. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers became the first team in the league to use the franchise tag this offseason by placing it on their veteran kicker.

Gould signed a two-year, $4 million deal with San Francisco in March of 2017. He led the league in field goals during his first season with the team, going 39-of-41 and a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond 50 yards. Gould was just as effective in 2018, pacing the NFL with a 97.1 field goal percentage by connecting on 33 of his 34 kicks.

There had been some speculation that the 14-year veteran might want to return to the Chicago Bears as a free agent, with whom he played every season of his career before being released after training camp in 2016. The team has reportedly decided to release incumbent kicker Cody Parkey at the start of the league year. Gould is the Bears' all-time leader in career points, field goals, and field goals longer than 50 yards.

Earlier this offseason, Gould certainly didn't dismiss the possibility of him signing in Chicago.

“Once a Bear always a Bear,” he told the Associated Press. “I truly mean that. This is where I spent 11 years of my life playing for an awesome organization. I've developed a lot of great relationships throughout the city but also the organization, just like I've done in New York, just like I've done in San Francisco. Will it happen? I don't know.”

Gould, 36, will earn just over $5 million next season as San Francisco's designated franchise player.
