The Philadelphia 76ers issued an apology on Friday to singer Sevyn Streeter, because they disallowed her from singing the national anthem on opening night, due to wearing a ‘We Matter' jersey.

Streeter posted a message on twitter about the incident, and the tweet received over 16,000 responses and 22,000 retweets which brought national attention to the matter.

The opening night game was a big event, and the Sixers wanted everything to go perfectly. In the event of trying to prevent controversy, the organization created more.

Later on, the team discussed the matter with it's players, and looked to resolve the issue. The following statement was issued by the organization on Friday:

The Sixers claim there was a clause in Streeter's contract that prevented her from making any political statements, but she denies ever reading or being made aware of any such clause.

There has been no public statements whether Streeter will accept the invitation to sing again.
