The Los Angeles Lakers started the 2020-21 season as the clear favorite to win the title. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading and a slew of new faces infusing new energy to the team, it was only natural to expect this.

Sure enough, the Lakers are a dominant 22-7 on the season, but everything isn't rosy in Hollywood. That's because Anthony Davis is currently dealing with a leg injury that's expected to keep him out through the All-Star break.

The nine-year veteran did not return after his leg collided with Nikola Jokic while driving to the rim. An MRI test revealed that Davis suffered a calf strain and re-aggravated his previous Achilles tendonosis at the same time.

Fortunately, there is no sign of rupture in the All-Star’s right Achilles, and Davis should be ready to roll when the games really matter down the road.

The effect of Davis’ injury on his card stock

The primary factor that will determine whether Anthony Davis’ value falls or rises is the Lakers’ ability to repeat as champions this season. Anything short of that accomplishment will be detrimental to the All-Star’s stock.

For that goal to become a reality, Davis must completely get well, return to the lineup, and be his old dominant self once again. Again, anything less than his All-NBA form will do nothing to boost card prices.

A day before Davis got injured, an auction of his PSA 10 2012-13 Prizm rookie card reached $2,499. After Sunday’s game, a copy of Davis’ PSA 10 rookie card plummeted all the way to $1,860 early this week. As of this point, his PSA 10 prices are ranging from $2,025 to $2,350.

Apart from Davis’ graded rookie card, another popular option for collectors is his 2019-20 Optic Holo offering, which features the veteran for the first time in a Lakers uniform. A PSA 10 of this card was sold more than a week ago at $99.99. At the time Davis got injured last Sunday, the price of this dipped down to $74, thanks to an auction held on the same day. One day later, a graded Optic Holo was auctioned for $102.5.

If you take a look at the numbers of both cards, it can be seen that Davis’ stock slightly fell and recovered right away. Of course, it has been mere days since he got injured. There are a lot of potential factors in play that can still affect his market prices.

Is it time to sell Anthony Davis cards or buy more of them?

This can be quite tricky given all the unknowns of Anthony Davis’ injury. On one hand, you’ve got a big man with a long history of getting injured. On the other, there’s always the chance he’ll come back better than ever to help the Lakers go back-to-back this year.

You’ve got to keep in mind that Davis’ injury isn’t a full-blown Achilles rupture. The potential for him to fully heal and dominate once again is still on the table. Plus, you’ve got LeBron and a squad of experienced veterans ready to pick up the slack in AD’s absence and keep Los Angeles in the fray.

If you look at it that way, this is the perfect opportunity to get Anthony Davis cards at a low price. Keep an eye on those dips so you’ll get the lowest possible price. Once the playoffs start, the Lakers will be back in the spotlight and should still be the favorite to win it all, and AD’s stock will return to its pre-injury level.
