While director Matthew Vaughn already has a slew of franchises to his name, his latest film Argylle introduced new characters and landscapes to the audience, Empire Magazine reported.

Even though the movie may not have been a hit with the critics, with its Tomatometer at 33% and an audience score at a much kinder 72%, when it was released in cinemas early this year, its streaming performance on both Apple TV+ and home video platforms, has resulted in renewed interest. Vaughn said that this interest could mean a potential sequel.

Argylle 2?

However, it's too early to consider it but with enough time to build up an audience, a sequel could become a reality.

“We're doing very well on streaming,” Vaughn told the magazine.

“People are liking it. Nothing would make me happier than making another one. I'm getting texts saying, ‘Wow, those reviews were f***ing harsh!' The more we can get people to watch Argylle, the more chance we make another one. I'd love to make another one, we've got it planned,” he added.

It's not the first time the director has spoken about Argylle sequels. Before the film premiered, he teased the possibility of sequels which will focus on Elly Conway's (Bryce Dallas Howard) novels.

The film follows the story of a writer whose spy stories start coming to life, which then reveals (SPOILER ALERT) that she was once an actual spy in her former life and the novels' plots were her real-life missions. Henry Cavill played the fictional titular character within the story within the movie. The final scenes of the film shows the actor playing a fan at the latest novel's reading, which hints at even more mysteries to uncover.

In the mid-credits, the movie also teased even more adventures in the future, which may cross over with Vaughn's other franchise, Kingsman. (SPOILER ENDS).

But what about the sequel plans?

The filmmaker stated, “It'll make a good little movie. We'll see … Never say never.”

Matthew Vaughn: It is what it is.

And the harsh reviews?

Well, according to another review aggregator site Metacritic, its Metascore is at 35 and the user score as 3.5, which both mean generally unfavorable. Argylle also missed the $100-million benchmark, coming in at $96.2 million at the global box office.

Vaughn candidly said that he was disappointed and quite unprepared with the movie's critical reviews.

“My guard came down on Argylle. We had done test screenings that had gone fantastically well. The premiere was a really fun night, and it was like going back to the Snatch days where there was such excitement. And I started drinking the Kool-Aid,” he noted.

The director doubled down on how the harsh criticisms surprised him.

“It's a fun, feel-good movie, or I thought it was a fun, feel-good movie. We didn't make Citizen Kane, but f***ing hell, then the reviews came out and I'm like, ‘Wait, what have I done to offend these people?' They were vitriolic. I'm not saying the movie's perfect by any means, but I didn't think it was offensive. That took me by surprise,” Vaughn said.

However, the filmmaker went out of his way to understand what caused the reviews to turn out the way they did.

“I even went round to cinemas because I thought, ‘Maybe I’ve lost the plot now.' It did rattle me,” he said.

“I'm genuinely scratching my head about that, because you can't ignore it. It wasn't like [just] a few bad reviews,” Vaughn added.

At the end of the day, he remained philosophical about the movie's reception.

“It is what it is. You learn from these things,” he surmised.

So despite the searing reviews, the filmmaker isn't deterred from the possibility of an Argylle sequel. Maybe this time around, instead of premiering it in cinemas, it could just go straight to streaming since the original film seems to be doing better there than in theaters.
