Joe Girardi became the first manager fired in the 2022 MLB season following his ousting from the Philadelphia Phillies. Shortly after, the Los Angeles Angels pulled the plug on Joe Maddon, ending his tenure with the team in his third season as manager. With the two skippers already out of a job just two months into the season, Astros boss Dusty Baker gave his honest opinion on the decision made by both franchises, indicating he felt Maddon and Girardi deserved a longer leash from their respective clubs, via Audacy Sports.

Baker said that he felt the decision from the Phillies and Angels to fire Girardi and Maddon, respectively, was premature.

“It's getting less and less forgiving because everybody can't win all the time the whole year, teams go on streaks.” said Baker.

Maddon was fired by the Angels on Tuesday after the team lost its 12th consecutive game the night before. In its first game without Maddon, LA was defeated 6-5 in extra innings to the Red Sox, while also potentially losing Mike Trout, who was removed from the game with an injury in the third inning. Girardi was let go by the Phillies after a rough start to the year. The team was expected to be competing for an NL East title but struggled out the gate, and felt a managerial change was necessary in order to get back on track. Baker, who is in his third season with the Astros, thinks they were dealt an unfair hand.

Baker is very familiar with the coaching landscape in MLB, having earned (and lost) various positions in the league throughout his managerial career, but he didn't seem too pleased about two of his fellow managers being let go this early into the year.
