In the midst of yet another strong season, the Houston Astros made an important move for their future. On Friday, the Astros agreed to a massive contract extension with star slugger Yordan Alvarez, as reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN.

Per Passan, the Astros have agreed to a six-year, $115 million contract extension with Alvarez, who is off to as good a start as any hitter in the 2022 MLB season. The deal is the largest ever for a designated hitter.

Alvarez, who had yet to reach arbitration, has also secured the fourth-largest contract for a player in such a circumstance, behind stars Mike Trout, Fernando Tatis Jr. and Buster Posey.

The 24-year-old has posted an outstanding .941 OPS with 14 home runs, 31 RBI and 30 runs scored. The Astros slugger dealt with injuries in his first two MLB seasons, including a torn patellar tendon in his right knee, resulting in him playing a combined 89 games between 2019 and the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

However, Alvarez rebounded, clubbing 33 homers while appearing in 144 games in 2021. He is among the leaders in average exit velocity, barrel rate and expected slugging percentage in 2022.

Alvarez is one of the game's best sluggers– and he's just 24. The Astros have a bright future with Alvarez in the middle of their lineup.

Thanks to the massive contract extension, he'll be occupying that spot for years to come.
