The Colorado Avalanche completed their incredible run in the NHL playoffs with a well-deserved Stanley Cup trophy. Even more amazing, however, they made history in the process.

As ESPN Stats & Info noted, their Stanley Cup victory–the third ever in franchise history–saw them tie the record for the second-best win-loss mark in the postseason since 1987. The Avalanche went 16-4 in the playoffs this 2022, losing just twice to the St. Louis Blues in the second round and two times as well to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup final.

The Avalanche swept both the Nashville Predators and Edmonton Oilers in their respective playoff series on the way to the dominant Stanley Cup run.

Only the 1988 Edmonton Oilers did better than Avalanche in the playoffs since 1987. The team, led by the legendary Wayne Gretzky at the time, went 16-2 in the postseason after sweeping the likes of the Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins (in the final no less) while needing just five games (losing once) against the then-Winnipeg Jets and Detroit Red Wings.

Adding more to the historic run by the Avalanche, Cale Makar was named the NHL Playoffs MVP and was handed the Conn Smythe Trophy, becoming the youngest defenseman since Bobby Orr in 1970 to win the accolade.

The Avalanche last won the Stanley Cup in 2001, so there are plenty of reasons to celebrate the win. The team made their mark in history as well, and that will definitely be remembered forever.
