The Chicago Bears have many tight ends, enabling the team to part with some of them. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Chicago is releasing Trey Burton.

Prior to the 2018 season, the Bears inked Burton to a four-year, $32 million deal in free agency. Burton was coming off of a season where he caught five touchdowns with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017. Above all, he helped the Eagles win the Super Bowl that season after completing a pass to Nick Foles on a play that was dubbed the “Philly Special”.

Nevertheless, in his first season with the Bears, Burton corraled a career-high 54 receptions for 569 yards and six touchdowns. While those aren't All-Pro numbers, Chicago was confident that Burton could be a go-to option in their offense moving forward.

However, in the 2019 season, Burton would be limited to just eight games due to injuries. Over the course of those eight games, the Florida product managed to catch just 14 passes for 84 yards.

Earlier this offseason, the Bears decided to sign Jimmy Graham to a two-year, $16 million deal in free agency. As a result of Graham's signing, it was evident that Burton's time in Chicago could be coming to an end.

By releasing Burton, the Bears are creating just $1.05 million in cap savings this offseason. At the same time, Chicago will accrue $7.5 million in dead cap for the 2020 season. Despite the belief that releasing Burton would help financially, this move was made strictly to rid of Burton's contract sooner rather than later.
