The Chicago Bears chose a running back in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, taking Iowa State's David Montgomery with the 73rd pick.

David Montgomery had a solid three-year stint with the Cyclones, and at 5-foot-10 and about 220 pounds, he is a stocky runner who is tough to bring down. Bears running backs coach Charles London is liking what he is seeing from the rookie, saying he has “pretty rare contact balance”:

“He definitely possesses that,” London said of Montgomery's ability to break tackles, according to Adam Jahns of The Athletic. “It’s important from the running back position because every play is not going to be clean and every hole is not going to be clean. Sometimes you just got to create that on your own. He did quite a bit of that at Iowa State. That was something that we noticed. And that is something you really can’t coach. You either kind of got it or you don’t and he does. It’s something we quickly noticed about him.”

The Bears traded running back Jordan Howard earlier this offseason and picked up Montgomery through the draft. They also acquired former Seattle Seahawks halfback Mike Davis through free agency.

Both Montgomery and Davis will join Tarik Cohen in what could end up being a very deep Bears backfield in 2019.

Montgomery is coming off a junior campaign in which he racked up 1,216 yards and 13 touchdowns while averaging 4.7 yards per carry. He arrived at Iowa State in 2016 and became the lead back during his sophomore season, totaling 1,146 yards and 11 scores that year.
