The Cincinnati Bengals selected Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow with the first overall pick in the 2020 draft, and in the rookie passer's NFL debut on Sunday, the LSU product scored in an unconventional way given his resume.
Burrow, 23, broke free against the Los Angeles Chargers for a 23-yard touchdown run—his first score in his pro career and the scoreless tie-breaking points for the Chargers' Week 1 matchup (via NFL).
Burrow had an electric final collegiate year with the Tigers, capped off with a Heisman award and national championship. Now he's with another kind of tiger—the Bengals are hoping Burrow is their man for the next decade plus in Cincinnati.
While Burrow has a great arm with accuracy, a designed run just so happens to be the rookie QB's first score in the NFL. The first overall selection ran straight up the gut for the Bengals with proper blocking the pick up a red zone first down and more.
With Chargers safety Derwin James out for some time, there was little help in the secondary, with no defensive back ready to take down Burrow, leading to the first score in the rookie's professional career.
