The Houston Texans have only been around since 2002, but managed to make so dynamic NFL Draft picks over the years. They have had a lot of high draft picks, especially their first couple of years in the NFL, due to some iffy seasons.
Let's breakdown the five best draft picks in Texans history.
5. Duane Brown, 2008, Round 1, Pick 26
Duane Brown was selected in the first round of the 2008 draft. He locked up the left side of the offensive line for his entire time with the Houston Texans.
Brown played from 2008 until 2017 when they traded him to the Seattle Seahawks after he became upset with the team. Even though things didn't end well with Brown, he is still one of the best draft picks in team history.
4. DeAndre Hopkins, 2013, Round 1, Pick 27
There could be an argument made that DeAndre Hopkins should be higher on the list, and if he would have stayed on the team longer, he probably would be. Hopkins joined the team before the 2013 season after being drafted in the first round. He remained with the franchise through the 2019 season.
During his time with the Texans, Hopkins caught 632 passes for 8,602 yards and 54 touchdowns.
3. Andre Johnson, 2003, Round 1, Pick 3
Andre Johnson is considered the best player in franchise history that has retired. Arguably, he was the first true fan favorite. Johnson was the third overall pick in the 2003 draft, spending 12 years with the team.
2008 and 2009 were the best seasons for Johnson, catching at least eight touchdowns and 1,500 yards in each of the two campaigns. Johnson was a seven-time pro-bowler and was twice named to the All-pro team.
Johnson will always be loved. Even when he left the team for a year to play for the Tennessee Titans, there wasn't any bad blood.
2. Deshaun Watson, 2017, Round 1, Pick 12
Deshaun Watson could really be number one on this list; though some of that is due to needing more time. If it wasn't for Watson, the team might be in a far different spot the last few season, as well as maybe lacking the bright future that awaits.
Watson has only played three seasons in the league, but he has already found a lot of success. In 2018, Watson threw for 4,165 yards, 26 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Depending how his career ends up, and if he stays with the Texans his entire career, he could be the best of all time. With a couple of Super Bowls, maybe he can be a Hall of Famer.
1. JJ Watt, 2011, Round 1, Pick 11
JJ Watt has dealt with a lot of injuries during his career, but when he is on the field, he is a special talent. He has wreaked havoc in opponents' backfields and he is the guy the defense has been built around for his entire tenure with the Texans.
During the 2012 and 2014 season, Watt racked up 20.5 sacks. If he can stay healthy, a recurring theme, he should have a few more good years for the Texans.
When he retires, he will be in the Texans ring of honor, and he should also be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
