The Buffalo Bills have added some depth to their defensive backfield. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that Maurice Alexander has signed with the Bills, mere minutes after the free-agent safety posted an illustration of himself wearing a Buffalo jersey on twitter.
ESPN's Mike Rodak subsequently reported that Alexander's deal with the Bills is for one year and $1.375 million.
Maurice Alexander visited Buffalo earlier this week.
The 6-foot-1, 222-pounder played last season with the Seattle Seahawks after signing a one-year deal in free agency. He totaled 10 tackles in nine games while toggling between the Seahawks' practice squad and active roster. Each of Alexander's 133 snaps in Seattle came on special teams; he didn't log a single snap on defense.
Picked by the St. Louis Rams in the fourth round of the 2014 draft, Alexander started all 14 games he appeared in for the team during the 2016 season, finishing with 50 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, and four passes defensed. He was released by the Rams on October 9, 2017, despite starting the first four games of the season.
“We wish nothing but the best for Mo; I really enjoyed being around Mo,” Los Angeles coach Sean McVay said after Alexander's release, per ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. “But I think it's a credit to the depth we've established at that safety position. There were some things where we expected a better level of play from him, and he knew that. Those things were communicated.”
The Bills boasted arguably the top pass defense in football last season, allowing a league-low 2,867 passing yards.
