In an Instagram Live interview, Carmelo Anthony of the Portland Trail Blazers reminisced about his early basketball years. The story of when Melo gained Kobe Bryant’s respect especially warmed every fan’s heart.

Talking to Dwyane Wade, the Blazers veteran recounted a night against the Los Angeles Lakers, back on his rookie year with the Denver Nuggets. Kobe had pressured him on defense and trashtalked the entire game. He had even touched his braids, which the now-Blazer emphasized as “the most disrespectful thing you can do.” After the matchup, the Black Mamba simply said to Anthony, “You got my respect.”

The now-35-year-old recalled his confusion, saying that he thought, “We gotta play for your respect?” When he later asked Kobe, the Lakers legend replied:

You didn't back down. You went hard. I wanted to see if you was gonna stand the test of time.

The Blazers forward noted how they grew close over the years after the said game, from talking about basketball to friendship, then family, then “just about life in general.”

Shortly after retiring from an illustrious 20-year career, Kobe Bryant passed away in a helicopter accident. The league has since given him much-deserved tributes, including adding his name to the All-Star MVP award.

Carmelo has certainly been inspired by his late close friend, being in somewhat of a redemption season. The veteran notably spent a few weeks searching for a team, signing with the Blazers shortly after. Since then, the 35-year-old forward has fit in well with Portland as a decent starter, averaging 15.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in 50 games.
