While speaking to reporters in Denver on Tuesday, Portland Trail Blazers big man Enes Kanter talked about the challenges of observing Ramadan while being an NBA player and playing in the playoffs.
The Blazers and Nuggets are tied at 2-2 in the second round of the postseason. Game 4 is on Tuesday in the Mile-High City.
Kanter joked with reporters he might have someone bring him a sandwich during Game 4 since he's probably going to be hungry after not being able to eat most of the day:
“While I'm playing the game, I'll be able to drink water and eat food,” Kanter said. “And I might just have someone get some peanut butter jelly sandwich on the bench for me to eat during timeouts.”
Kanter has been a warrior for the Blazers. He's playing with a separated left shoulder and will now have to fast most of the day for Ramadan and then play in a crucial Game 4. If you weren't a fan of Kanter before, you definitely are now.
Kanter is averaging 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in the playoffs. He's shooting 57.6 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 85.2 percent from the free-throw line.
The Blazers are fortunate they were able to sign Kanter after he was bought out by the New York Knicks.
