Minor League baseball players typically have plenty of motivation to make it to the big leagues for the sake of getting to play Major League Baseball. However, Toronto Blue Jays ace Kevin Gausman revealed an entirely different motivation on his path to the Show.

The Blue Jays ace discussed the matter with Barstool Sports's “Starting 9” in a rather candid interview.

“No, not anymore,” Gausman replied to a question asking if MLB tests for weed. “I got drafted in 2012 and back then you could only do it if you were on the 40-man (roster)… let me just get to the Big Leagues so I could do that. Now guys in the minor leagues can do it. And I'm like man I was kind of glad that wasn't the case when I was in the minor leagues, ‘cuz, you know, if I was in Bowie, Maryland and I was able to smoke pot, that probably wouldn't be the best thing for me.”

In all seriousness, smoking obviously was not Kevin Gausman's only motivation for making MLB. But it seemed to have played a role. He joins many other professional athletes who have begun speaking publicly on weed in professional sports.

Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant has attempted to change the narrative around marijuana and professional sports. He recently spoke with David Letterman in a Netflix special on the matter.

Kevin Gausman is also enjoying a terrific season for the Blue Jays. He signed with Toronto during the offseason and has been the best pitcher in baseball so far in 2022.
