There is no question that the majority of the Atlanta Braves fan base was shaken up by the news of Freddie Freeman leaving the team and joining the Dodgers in Los Angeles. But it won’t be just the fans who miss Freeman in 2022. Shortstop Dansby Swanson shared a hilarious response when asked if he would assume Freeman’s former locker at Truist Park.

“No! Maybe they’ll put caution tape over it.”

Swanson was asked the question because he is expected to take on more of a leadership role this season. The shortstop is an anchor in the field and is capable with the bat. He may not be the best player on the team, but Swanson is a “glue guy.” Someone who does a tremendous job of keeping spirits high and making the plays that should be made without being too flashy.

He was an important piece to the puzzle during Atlanta’s 2021 World Series championship run. Swanson had a number of key hits including a big home run in the World Series, while also playing an impressive brand of defense that saw him make the series clinching out.

Swanson’s comments are somewhat light-hearted, but they also reflect the respect that Freddie Freeman carried in the Braves’ clubhouse. But it also points to the important role that Swanson will need to play in 2022. The Braves have plenty of talent but they need someone to step up and lead and that should be the shortstop this year.

Dansby Swanson and the Atlanta Braves will look to make a deep postseason run this season.
