Philadelphia 76ers head coach Brett Brown was recently in Australia and appeared in court to testify on a case he filed against his former assistant coach and friend.

The 56-year-old reportedly claimed that ex-NBA player Shane Heal, who was his assistant while in charge of the Australian National Team from 2009-2011, defrauded him of $558,000. In a piece made by Alexandra Patrikios of the Australian Associated Press via The Sydney Morning Herald, Brown invested $186,000 in three companies which were “deregistered” where he “assumed that the money was going to be used” for the purposes Heal made him believe.

“He [Heal]is accused of defrauding current Philadelphia 76ers NBA coach Brown of $750,000 [$558,000 US] when he was as sole director of three companies.”

“But asked if there was anything in the loan documents that provided the money had to be used for a particular purpose, Brown said: “‘I assumed that the money was going to be used for what Shane told me it was going to be used for'.”

“As he was pressed on details of agreements made over the $250,000 loan, Brown said he felt he was lending money to Heal personally, even if the legal particulars were otherwise.”

Heal held the sole director position of Shyfox Pty Ltd, Cre8ive Constructions Queensland Pty Ltd, and 23 Investments Pty Ltd, which are all not existent anymore.

The Melbourne native had two stints in the NBA as a player. He appeared in 43 games for the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1996-1997 campaign, and had a brief return in 2003, when he played six games for the San Antonio Spurs. Heal is currently living in his home country as an entrepreneur, following a one-year head coaching gig with the now defunct South East Queensland Stars of the WNBL.

There will be more hearings to come where Heal will also testify in his defense. The next session is scheduled on July 20, where Brown is expected to once again travel to Australia to fulfill his participation in the case.
