The Cleveland Browns are sticking with veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor as their starting quarterback moving forward. Rookie gunslinger Baker Mayfield will be the backup as the team heads into the 2018 NFL season hoping to bounce back from a winless season last year.

Although Mayfield has embraced the backup role with the start of his first season approaching, the Oklahoma product will be ready and able if called upon in Week 1 against the division rival Pittsburgh Steelers at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sept. 9. Mayfield made this clear following the team's preseason finale this week, via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

“I’m ready to go,” Mayfield said after he played the entire first half of the Browns’ 35-17 win over the Detroit Lions in the preseason finale at Ford Field. “It’s my job to be ready for that. So any opportunity I can get, I’ll take it. But I’ll be ready to do whatever it is, prepare the defense [as the scout-team quarterback], and just be ready to play as well.”

With Taylor suffering a hand injury that looked bad enough to thrust Mayfield into the spotlight at quarterback, the rookie must be prepared for anything as the team embarks on what will likely be a make-or-break season for head coach Hue Jackson. Even though Mayfield was impressive during the NFL preseason, Jackson has insisted on keeping Taylor at the top of the depth chart and that may not change unless there's an injury or the veteran struggles.

It'll be an interesting season, to say the least for the Browns. Cleveland has gotten a lot of buzz this year with the addition of Mayfield and star wideout Jarvis Landry along with a healthy Myles Garrett. The team could be on the cusp of a breakout year or a reality check resulting in an overhaul starting with Jackson's departure.
