Before being drafted No. 1 at all in 2018, Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield faced a slew of questions, and mostly, those questions were about his maturity level.

Mayfield remembers those queries very well to this day:

“Oh, God, it was sickening,” Mayfield said during a recent interview with GQ. “‘What were you thinking when you got arrested? What were you thinking when you played Kansas and grabbed your crotch? Are you gonna mature?’ Blah blah blah.”

But Mayfield did see one positive in the whole thing, and it was that he got to tell his own story rather than having other people do it for him:

“If I could see the future, I’d tell you what’s gonna (expletive) happen,” said Mayfield. “But I think that was the best part about that process. I got to answer those questions for the first time, instead of the media putting it all out there. I got to answer it and say it in my own words.”

Of course, Mayfield also did a lot of his talking on the field, both figuratively and literally.

The University of Oklahoma product enjoyed a fantastic rookie campaign, breaking the single-season rookie record with 27 touchdowns and tallying 3,725 yards and 14 interceptions while completing 63.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 93.7.

The Browns also had their best season in years in the process, as they went 7-8-1, marking their best finish since winning 10 games all the way back in 2007.

Cleveland will open up its regular season against the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 8.
