Per NFL.com's Ian Rappaport, the Cleveland Browns are close to hiring former Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks as their defensive coordinator.

Wilks, last year with the Cardinals, had his first opportunity as an NFL head coach. He led the team to the worst record in the entire NFL, 3-13. Though he did end up being fired, this did allow the team to get the first overall pick in the upcoming draft.

Previously from 1995-2004, Wilks hopped around the collegiate level as a defensive coordinator. Then from 2005-2014, he was a defensive backs coach in the NFL with the Washington Redskins, Chicago Bears, San Diego Chargers, and Carolina Panthers.

It will be interesting to see how he performs in his first opportunity to be a full-time defensive coordinator.

The Browns had hired earlier this past week Greg Kitchens are their head coach moving forward. He was previously their offensive coordinator after firing Hue Jackson halfway through the season. Kitchens led the team to be very successful offensively, earning him the job. They averaged 24 points per game and went a respectable 5-3 in the second half of the season.

The Browns had interviewed former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy for the position. It seemed as if many coaching candidates across the league were not interested in the job.

With the combination of Kitchens and Wilks, it will be intriguing to see whether or not the Browns will be able to step out of mediocrity. The Browns organizations trust their abilities as coaches, as they did hire them both over outsiders and potentially higher profile coaches.
