Through the first four years of his NFL career, running back Isaiah Crowell spent it all with the Cleveland Browns where he experienced more downs than ups during his tenure.

This NFL offseason, Crowell decided to leave via free agency by electing to ink a three-year, $12 million deal with the New York Jets. According to Brian Costello of The New York Post, the 25-year-old revealed that he never truly knew what his role in the game plan from week to week with the Browns.

Crowell came to the Jets after four years with the Browns. He was Cleveland’s leading rusher last year with 206 carries, but he still felt unsure of his role at times as he split carries with Duke Johnson.

“You just never knew,” Crowell said. “Sometimes it was [an every-down situation], sometimes it wasn’t. You just never knew week in and week out. I felt like that was discouraging and annoying.”

In the latter portion of his time in Cleveland, he had garnered the position as being the starter, but he was stuck in a spilt-carry role alongside Duke Johnson over the last couple of years. He had nearly posted his first career 1,000 rushing yard campaign by totaling 952 yards in the 2016 season.

However, this never truly allowed for him to excel as the primary factor in the backfield while experiencing a tremendous level of failure as the Browns have won just one regular season game over the last two years including going 0-16 this past campaign. These comments from Crowell just speak to the dysfunction that is present in Cleveland has continued to keep the franchise from ever experiencing sustained success over his four years there.

He now joins a situation where he could be a major factor out of the backfield while playing behind a promising young quarterback in rookie Sam Darnold. It is simply a fresh start for Crowell that could get his career back on track.
