Browns WR Jarvis Landry will start ‘on the outside’ in Todd Haley’s offense

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry will start on the outside for new offensive coordinator Todd Haley this season.

The Cleveland Browns made quite the splash this offseason with the acquisition of wide receiver Jarvis Landry. It appears offensive coordinator Todd Haley already has an idea of how he is going to use him.

Landry spent most of his career with the Miami Dolphins working out of the slot. However, according to Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com, Haley will have the star wideout line up on the outside on offense:

The presence of Landry, the three-time Pro Bowler acquired in a trade with the Dolphins, eases the sting of Gordon's absence. He dazzled in minicamp with one-handed catches and plenty of touchdown receptions from Tyrod Taylor. He was primarily a slot receiver in Miami, but will start on the outside in Todd Haley's offense. He'll go deep more frequently.

It may not seem like a substantial update. A player of Landry's caliber can line up virtually anywhere on the field and still be effective. He proved that after finishing as the NF:'s receptions leader for the 2017 NFL season.

Furthermore, it makes sense that Haley would want to put their best receiver in a true No. 1 position. Perhaps he plans to use Landry much like he did with wide receiver Antonio Brown when he was with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While they may be considered a bit undersized for a primary receiver, they are nonetheless effective at exploiting one-on-one matchups.

The receiving corps took a bit of a hit with wideout Josh Gordon taking a leave of absence prior to training camp. As a result, it seems the Browns are looking to establish their roles early on.
