With Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid and point guard Ben Simmons being ruled ineligible for the 2021 NBA All-Star Game due to COVID-19 contact tracing, the decision to push through with the game has been put into question. Among those who questioned why the game will still take place despite the risk of contracting COVID-19 is Milwaukee Bucks big man Bobby Portis, who took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the matter.

Portis is referring to the league’s approach with its Rising Stars Challenge, which was traditionally a part of the All-Star Weekend festivities. The NBA still named the players who have been selected to the Team USA and Team World rosters to honor the top first and second-year players in the league. However, a game will not actually be played due to the risk of contraction COVID-19.

The NFL also adopted a similar approach in the 2021 Pro Bowl, with the league naming the rosters for the NFC and AFC but electing not to play the actual game.

Portis’ suggestion of naming the All-Star rosters for Team LeBron and Team Durant will still recognize the hard work put in by the NBA’s best players this season while choosing not to have a game and have them stay with their families keeps them safe and avoids the risk of transmission. Many have chimed in and the Bucks forward is just one of many.

But despite facing criticism for pushing through with its midseason showcase, the 2021 NBA All-Star Game is still set to take place, with New Orleans Pelicans big man Zion Williamson set to take Embiid’s place as a starter for Team Durant.
